Assam Water Research and Management Institute was earlier known as River Research Station (RRS). The RRS was set up as a Research and Advisory Wing of Water Resources Department Assam in the year 1958. The institution was carrying out Research and Investigation in all diversified basic fields of Civil Engineering and earned the distinction of becoming the primary research organization of its kind in the whole North Eastern Region of India. The River Research Station was established at Byrnihat, about 26 KM away from Guwahati in the year 1958.
